Menopause… a universal experience that all women will or have already gone through. Previously there wasn’t a lot of information on what to expect or even how to combat the effects of the hormone fluctuations. Surprisingly, menopause significantly affects the skin health. Recent studies have shown that post-menopausal women’s faces age more quickly than men. The decrease in estrogen levels are also linked to skin dryness, aging, and the increased facial hair. Other symptoms include a decrease in collagen, decreased skin laxity, acne, impaired wound healing, and sun spots.

An exciting new treatment for the effects of menopause on the skin is estrogen cream. Estrogen cream has traditionally been used for vaginal symptoms of menopause; however, when applied onto the face it can help to increase collagen, restore moisture and decrease wrinkle depth and pore sizes. There are 3 types of estrogen, and Estriol is the most commonly utilized one on the face. There is minimal systemic absorption with Estriol cream showing that it is even safe in patients with a history of breast cancer. Estriol cream can be prescribed through a compounding pharmacy for those needing a little extra boost!

Other ways to care for the aging skin are peptides, retinol, and sunscreen! Peptides boost collagen, and the One Skin moisturizer has a peptide that also helps to restore sensent cells. Also, this is a good time to remind everyone that a mineral based sunscreen should be worn every day, even in the winter months!
