Key Ingredients

AZELAIC ACID (DIETHYL AZELATE), 7%

A natural component of wheat, barley, and rye, this ingredient is antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory with melanin inhibiting properties.

LACTIC ACID, 5%

A naturally-occurring alpha hydroxy acid derived from fermented milk, lactic acid helps speed up cellular turnover, exfoliates dead skin cells, and is gentle enough for people with sensitive skin or rosacea. Since lactic acid is part of our natural moisturizing factor, it is especially compatible with human skin.

PHYTIC ACID, 3%

Found in high concentrations in bran and certain seeds, this light exfoliliator is believed to inhibit the synthesis of melanin by chelating (sequestering, or “trapping”) certain metal ions, like copper, that are needed to convert tyrosine into the melanin-precursor DOPA. Phytic acid also acts as a reducing agent (”removing” an oxygen atom from darker melanins to make them lighter, almost as if de-oxidizing them).
